Description

This course combines confined spaces training and the use of gas testing equipment. It is about the safety of people who enter or are associated with confined spaces and ensuring that a safe atmosphere exists to permit work to be carried out.

Hazards and risk management in confined spaces are covered, roles and responsibilities of all parties, and the maintenance and operation of gas testing equipment.

Our course covers both theory and practical in our purpose-built training facility to provide realistic scenario experiences. We can customise the course to your workplace, as well as deliver it on your site.

Participants finish the course being able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces, and their permit notification and implementation requirements.
  • Identify control measures to eliminate, isolate, and minimise the risk of hazards in confined spaces.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements.
  • Describe the responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces or conducting observation duties for confined spaces.
  • Identify hazards and controls within confined spaces.
  • Develop an emergency procedure plan for a confined space.
  • Complete documentation required for confined space entry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of gas testing and related hazards in the energy and chemical industry.
  • Perform gas tests, and interpret and respond to gas test results, in an energy and chemical plant.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of atmospheric testing in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Conduct atmospheric tests; and interpret and respond to atmospheric testing results

This course covers NZQA Unit Standard(s):

18426: Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with Confined Spaces
17599: Plan a Confined Space entry
25510:   Operate at atmospheric testing device to determine a suitable atmosphere exists to work safely
3058: Perform gas testing in an energy and chemical environment
Note: 3058 optional unit confirmed at point of booking.

Entry Criteria

Learner Detail Confirmation:

All learners are required to have their identity verified prior to attending training.

If a learner is new to Industry Training Works, or their details cannot be confirmed within our database, we may request a copy of valid identification to complete enrolment.

Course Criteria:

A sound understanding of hazard identification and general workplace health and safety is strongly recommended.

Participants must meet minimum English language requirements (e.g. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent / IELTS 5.5) If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another course participant).

Literacy & Numeracy Support

We have processes in place to support all participants throughout their training, helping them achieve certification where applicable.

There is also a free online learning platform, Pathways Awarua, which helps build reading, writing, and maths skills, along with practical work and life skills. This includes support for learning to drive (Road Code), heavy vehicle and forklift licences, health and safety, and understanding personal finance (My Money).

Find out more about Pathways Awarua here.
