Health & Safety Representative

Course Overview

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSW Act) prompted a change in the standard of training for Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs). Unit standard 29315 now replaces unit standard 20918 as the recognised industry standard for Health and Safety Representatives.  HSRs will not be able to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) or direct unsafe work to cease if they have not completed the approved WorkSafe New Zealand HSR Transition Training course or training awarding the approved NZQA unit standard. Industry Training Works New Initial Health and Safety Representative Training course awards unit standard 29315 which enables HSRs to meet the requirements of HSW Act. Courses are available to book now. Industry Training Works Initial Health and Safety Representative Training is designed to introduce HSRs to new concepts, such as PCBU and Officer, and enable them to successfully carry out their responsibilities according to the new Act. This training includes group and individual activities used to confirm an understanding of the specific course requirements. This two-day programme will enable Health and Safety Representatives to explain the overall role and functions of HSRs in the workplace. HSRs will learn how to act effectively as an advocate for workers. They will identify the responsibilities of a PCBU and WorkSafe New Zealand in reference to their role. They will describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating during the process with both the worker and management. HSRs that successfully complete the course will have the power to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and direct a worker to cease unsafe work.
