Description

Being involved in a fire can be a traumatic experience. Actions can lead to unnecessary property damage and in the worst-case scenario serious injury or loss of life.

This course is for people whose home or workplace has a fire extinguisher available for use. It teaches how to suppress fire with hand extinguishers and hose reels.

Content includes personal safety and actions for first response, introduction to fire science, classes of fire, fire suppression methods and use of fire extinguishers and hose reels.

As part of the course participants will identify and select the correct extinguisher for fire classes and use these to extinguish live fires.

The programme is customised to ensure participant familiarity with their own workplace fire and emergency systems and equipment.

At the completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the fire classes and fire suppression techniques
  • Select and implement a strategy to deal with fire.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the chemistry of fire and the basic principles of the physics of fire.

This course covers NZQA Unit Standard(s)
