Description
Make sure you and your team’s skills are up to date with the latest industry standards for hazardous substances in the workplace.
By completing this training, you will:
- Develop knowledge of workplace hazardous substances;
- Understand the safe use, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances
- Learn how to identify, select and apply legislated and other controls designed to minimise the exposure of workers to these risks, and
- Manage a workplace uncontrolled release of a hazardous substance
- Ensure the proper reporting required under the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
This Course is for people who are responsible for the management, storage, use, disposal and handling of hazardous substances in a workplace. This includes store persons, team leaders, supervisors, shift managers, safety officers, purchasing officers and other managers responsible for the PCBU Hazardous Substances controls.
In accordance with the requirements to maintain Consent to Assess for the unit standards taught on this course, ITW had this course pre moderated and approved by our standard setting body, The Skills Organisation.
Training will include:
- Understanding and managing a workplace hazardous substances inventory
- Thorough understanding of safety data sheets
- Environmental and health effects of hazardous substances
- Tracking of hazardous substances and emergency management controls

31290: Demonstrate knowledge of safe management and potential adverse effects of hazardous substances in the workplace
31293: Demonstrate safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances in the workplace

Entry Criteria
Learner Detail Confirmation:
All learners are required to have their identity verified prior to attending training.
If a learner is new to Industry Training Works, or their details cannot be confirmed within our database, we may request a copy of valid identification to complete enrolment.
Course Criteria:
Participants must meet minimum English language requirements (e.g. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent / IELTS 5.5) If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another course participant).
Literacy & Numeracy Support
We have processes in place to support all participants throughout their training, helping them achieve certification where applicable.
There is also a free online learning platform, Pathways Awarua, which helps build reading, writing, and maths skills, along with practical work and life skills. This includes support for learning to drive (Road Code), heavy vehicle and forklift licences, health and safety, and understanding personal finance (My Money).
