Description

Elevating work platforms (MEWP) are a standard feature on most industrial sites. It is essential that operators of MEWP items are trained to use the machines safely and effectively.

Our course provides MEWP operators with a combination of theory and instruction in practical use of the various platforms. We cover familiarisation with the operating environment, hazards and risk management, MEWP capabilities and limits, fitness for purpose, pre- use inspections, fault reporting, start up and shut down and certification.

By completing this course you will learn the:

  • Types of MEWP and their suitability for purpose.
  • Safety features of MEWP.
  • Legislative requirements in relation to Code of Practice and the use of MEWP.

Please note, the use of harnesses specific to these machines is included but does not cover assessment required for work at heights training.

This course covers NZQA Unit Standard(s):

23966:   Describe the types of elevating work platforms (MEWP), & legislative requirements for their use. (Mandatory Unit Standard).

In addition to US 23966, one or two of the below unit standards can be selected on a company booked course.  Our scheduled course practical options are Scissor Lift & Self-propelled Boom.

23960:   Scissor Lift
23961:   Truck Mounted Boom
23962:   Self-propelled Boom Lift (Knuckler and Telescopic)
23963:   Trailer Mounted Boom (Cherry Picker and Spider Mounted)
23964:   Vertical Lift

Learner Detail Confirmation:

All learners are required to have their identity verified prior to attending training.

If a learner is new to Industry Training Works, or their details cannot be confirmed within our database, we may request a copy of valid identification to complete enrolment.

Course Criteria:

We recommend that learners hold Unit Standard 23229 (Use a Safety Harness System). A good understanding of hazard identification and general workplace health and safety is also strongly recommended.

Participants must meet minimum English language requirements (e.g. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent / IELTS 5.5) If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another course participant).

Literacy & Numeracy Support

We have processes in place to support all participants throughout their training, helping them achieve certification where applicable.

There is also a free online learning platform, Pathways Awarua, which helps build reading, writing, and maths skills, along with practical work and life skills. This includes support for learning to drive (Road Code), heavy vehicle and forklift licences, health and safety, and understanding personal finance (My Money).
