Description

Our Rigging & Slinging Regular Loads course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely prepare, sling, and move loads during lifting operations.

Designed for personnel involved in lifting activities across construction, manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, and industrial environments, this course covers load assessment, lifting equipment selection, safe slinging techniques, hazard management, and communication methods used during crane operations.

Through a combination of theory and practical exercises, participants will develop the skills required to safely sling regular loads and effectively direct lifting operations using recognised communication methods.

On completion of this training you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe lifting and slinging practices.
  • Identify hazards associated with lifting operations and apply appropriate control measures.
  • Select suitable lifting equipment for various load types and lifting situations.
  • Inspect lifting gear and identify equipment that is damaged, defective, or unsuitable for use.
  • Calculate or determine load weights and centres of gravity.
  • Prepare and sling regular loads safely and securely.
  • Apply safe load handling techniques.
  • Communicate effectively during lifting operations using recognised hand signals and communication systems.
  • Direct crane movements safely during lifting activities.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved in lifting operations.

Covering unit standard(s)

Public courses can be scheduled with minimum attendee numbers, or group bookings are available on request.

Entry Criteria

Learner Detail Confirmation:

All learners are required to have their identity verified prior to attending training.

If a learner is new to Industry Training Works, or their details cannot be confirmed within our database, we may request a copy of valid identification to complete enrolment.

Course Criteria:

To achieve Unit Standard 3789, participants must have completed a minimum of 40 lifting operations across a range of scenarios, including at least six variations in lifting conditions such as load types, crane configurations, work locations, or communication methods.

Evidence of this experience must be provided and may be submitted before training, at the time of booking, or following course completion. NZQA credits cannot be reported until the required evidence has been received and verified.

A good understanding of hazard identification and general workplace health and safety is also strongly recommended.

Participants must meet minimum English language requirements (e.g. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent / IELTS 5.5) If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another course participant).

Literacy & Numeracy Support

We have processes in place to support all participants throughout their training, helping them achieve certification where applicable.

There is also a free online learning platform, Pathways Awarua, which helps build reading, writing, and maths skills, along with practical work and life skills. This includes support for learning to drive (Road Code), heavy vehicle and forklift licences, health and safety, and understanding personal finance (My Money).
