Description

This course provides the initial Health and Safety Representative Training needed to gain an understanding of Health and Safety Representative role and to successfully carry out responsibilities according to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSW Act).

Over the one day the course includes group and individual activities to:

  • Explain the overall role and functions of HSRs in the workplace.
  • Show how to act effectively as an advocate for workers.
  • Identify the responsibilities of a PCBU and WorkSafe New Zealand in reference to their role.
  • Describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating during the process with both the worker and management.

Appointed HSRs that successfully complete the course will have the power to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and direct a worker/s to cease unsafe work.

Entry Criteria

Learner Detail Confirmation: 

All learners are required to have their identity verified prior to attending training.

If a learner is new to Industry Training Works, or their details cannot be confirmed within our database, we may request a copy of valid identification to complete enrolment.

Course Criteria:

Knowledge of Hazard Identification and general health & safety in the workplace is strongly recommended.

Participants must meet minimum English language requirements (e.g. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent / IELTS 5.5) If this requirement is not met, a reader/writer must be provided (not another course participant).

Literacy & Numeracy Support

We have processes in place to support all participants throughout their training, helping them achieve certification where applicable.

There is also a free online learning platform, Pathways Awarua, which helps build reading, writing, and maths skills, along with practical work and life skills. This includes support for learning to drive (Road Code), heavy vehicle and forklift licences, health and safety, and understanding personal finance (My Money).
